Guidelines for Creating Objects
In truth, nearly any item found in The Sims could be representative
of things we will find in the Luna City Cavern in the year 2100.
With a bit of texture and a coat of paint, even cast iron can look
like wood. A flat wall can be painted to look like anything. Indeed,
we might expect that people living in the moon will use a lot of
stuff that looks like something else, just like we do on Earth today.
Think of the extensive use of artificial woodgrain in furniture and
counter tops, and artificial leather in plastic softgoods.
However, in Moon Sims we would like to present objects that celebrate
the lunar environment.
Objects in The Sims are mostly the basic domestic things you'll find
in just about any house anywhere in the world. What we're looking for in
the Livin' Luna scenario is things that might be cost-effectively made from
in-situ material or things we would expect to find in the Luna City Cavern
100 years from now, with a minimum amount of imports.
Materials
- No wood
- No plastic
- Conservative use of fabric
- Cement blocks, not brick
- Abundant glass
- Creative use of stone
- Creative use of metal
Environment
- Lots and lots and lots of plants
- Walls with handrails
- Handrails on everything else
- Minimal dependence on the gravity field
(Refer to the Great Coffee Pot debate on artemis-list.)
- Extensive automation and electronics
- Any obvious space-related or astronomical stuff
- Wall-mounted lights
Table lamps and floor lamps depend on gravity. The Sims
doesn't show ceilings so ceiling lamps don't work
really well in the game form an aesthetic point of
view.
- Rock gardening or hydroponic facilities
- Outdoor stone textures
They would be in the "floors" sections of a Sims web site.
- Rocks
Vehicles and Other Large Decorative Items
- Electric cars
- Pressurized vehicles for surface transportation
- Robotic mining equipment
