Ascent Vehicle Antennas and Dishes
The rendezvous radar will require a deployable boom to be run out from
the main bulk of the Ascent Vehicle. This will support a little dish about
1/2 meter in diameter.
We'll want the boom out about 2 meters to move the radar antenna away
from the crew -- those are microwave frequencies.
A couple of whip antennas for UHF, stubs about 1/2 meter long, would
complete the job. UHF will give us broadcast-quality voice and enough
data to monitor the status of the ascent stage. We want redundancy because
during its flight the ascent stage has to have good communication with the
LTV. These two machines will be discussing their relative trajectories
throughout that phase of the flight.
